Following up Stage 3 where our 2006 Grabber Blue GT was outfitted with the parts needed to properly prepare the car for a supercharger, as well as putting the rotating mass on a serious diet, Stage 4 is when Grabber Boost finally sees forced induction and heads to the track to try to run down our 2014 5.0L Coyote.
Stage 3 may have shaved off a few tenths in the 1/4 mile and gave Grabber Boost the ability to stomach all the added PSI it was destined for, but Stage 4 is where we make serious power. The prep work is in the past–an intercooled V3 Vortech blower and supporting mods bumped the power output on our ’06 from Stage 3′s solid 301HP/316TQ to a road blurring 463HP/425TQ at the rear wheels. Stage 4 was all about bumping the power to the level needed to compete with the ’14, and beat it. But, as many experienced racers know, there are more than a few factors that can determine a race other than power output.
After the first run, it wasn’t looking good for Dave and his team. They failed to gain traction off the line and though their MPH beat out Project Coyote, they fell well short of topping the 2014 GT’s 11.97 second quarter mile pass by going a mediocre 12.32 @ 115.45 MPH. The second pass was thwarted by the ’14 GT rotating an axle tube and blowing the rear drivers side tire, nearly sending project Coyote into the wall. With the 5.0L out of commission and the competition tied at 1-1 in a best of three, it was decided that Project Grabber Boost would be crowned the winner if it could manage to beat Project Coyote’s 11.97 second pass time on the team’s third run.
And top that 11.97 second time they did. Grabber Boost blasted through its final 1/4 mile run at a blistering 11.69 @ 119.30 MPH. What a wonderful thing boost and bit of traction can turn out to be! We look forward to fixing the Coyote and running these two monsters again; we’ll just have to wait until the weather turns.
