2018 Mustang GT vs. 2018 Camaro SS

For 2018, Ford’s legendary 5.0-liter V8 engine has been thoroughly reworked. It is more powerful than any Mustang GT before it. This newfound power was achieved with the first application for Mustang of Ford’s new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection on a V8 engine. The combination of these elements results in the delivery of robust low-end torque, higher RPMs, and improved fuel efficiency. The manual transmission on the engine has also been upgraded to achieve optimal torque. For the GT V8, the manual has been completely redesigned to include a twin-disc clutch and dual-mass flywheel to provide more efficient modulation.

The addition of a new 10-speed automatic transmission is arguably the best decision Ford could have made. This all-new gearbox features a wide-ratio span and optimized gear spacing that delivers a higher average power for acceleration with better acceleration and performance you can feel.

It has already been proclaimed that the upcoming Mustang GT will be the fastest, most powerful one yet. The Mustang GT’s updated 5.0-liter V8 gives off an impressive 460 horsepower with 420 lb-ft of torque. This is an improvement from the 435 horses and 400 lb-ft of torque produced by the 2017 model. Meanwhile, the Camaro SS produces 5 less horses than the GT, clocking in at 455. However, it also has 455 lb-ft of torque, which is 35 more than the Mustang. Even so, those numbers don’t really give us a good picture of who is faster or more powerful. Let’s proceed to the weight classes.

The 2018 Mustang GT weighs in at around 3,705 pounds, about 20 more pounds than the Camaro SS at 3,685. Visibility in these large muscle cars is certainly a topic that has been discussed and even made fun of. In a Mustang, you sit higher and have a larger span of visibility. However, in a Camaro, you are sitting lower with high sills and limited visibility.

Even with those close numbers, the Mustang GT can go from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds, which beats our the Camaro SS at a 4-second flat time. The sub-4.0 time is enough to win a little victory over its archival, the SS. On the quarter mile, however, the Mustang was recorded at 13.0 seconds at 112 mph. The Camaro SS was quicker at 12.3 seconds and 116 mph. Of course, these numbers are from the past model year, as new numbers have not yet been released. With lower weight, higher power, more gears, and greater grip, the Camaro surpassed the Mustang in performance testing. The Camaro, with a power to weight advantage, was recorded pivoting better under acceleration and deceleration. With the upgraded Mustang GT for the upcoming model year, however, we have yet to see how this all plays out.

The Ford Mustang GT starts at around $35,095 for the regular and $39,095 for the Premium Fastback. The Camaro SS costs $37,995 for the 1SS and $42,995 for the 2SS model. It all comes down to brand loyalty and which muscle car your preference is; you already know ours!
