Shelby American is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legendary Super Snake Mustang with a new wide body edition. Throughout the years, the Super Snake has become synonymous with only the fastest and most remarkable Ford Mustangs out there. With Shelby unveiling the first official take on a wide body S550 Mustang, it is clear that they continue to put their best foot (or should we say wheel?) forward.
Concept Comes to Life
When Shelby American introduced its 2017 Shelby Super Snake wide body concept in May, it was their first in over a decade. The concept is based on the current Ford Mustang platform, but it has been optimized for road racing with a wider track and new suspension, brake, and tire and wheel options. The wide body concept began with the popular 50th Anniversary Shelby Super Snake, revealed in January. However, that edition was strictly made for drag racing, as opposed to road racing.
“[The] wide body option for the previous generation Super Snake was very popular because it put more rubber under the car to improve traction for drag racing,” said Shelby American president Gary Patterson, Shelby American president. “The current Super Snake emphasizes handling much more. Instead of being optimized for straight line performance, it provides more grip on all four corners… to give drivers a serious competitive edge on the road course.”
Super Power for a Super Snake
This Super Snake powered by a supercharged Ford 5.0-liter V8 engine that is rated at a whopping 750 horsepower. A fully adjustable coil-over suspension system was added to the car, in conjunction with stronger spindles and hubs, and hardened wheel studs. The old brakes were swapped out for four-piston Brembo calipers that bite 16-inch front rotors and 14-inchers in the back. A more aggressive wheel and tire package was incorporated to ensure that all 700+ horses reach the road. To be exact, the car features 20-inch wheels with 12.5-inch wide rear and 11-inch wide front tires.
The combination of these features provide the driver with more grip for earlier acceleration and later braking, especially when it comes to corners. There is no doubt that the Shelby Super Snake concept is every road racer’s dream come true, especially with the deliverance of better communication to the driver and increased track absorption. The addition of approximately four inches to the car’s rear track and two and a half inches to the front maximize the handling of the car as well.
Lightning Blue for Lightning Fast
The “Lightning Blue” Shelby Super Snake concept includes Shelby spec track suspension; rear lower control arms; performance spindle and control arms; and a full Brembo brake system. The body components include rear quarter panels; a rocker styling kit; front vented fenders; hardened wheel lugs; and Michelin performance tires.
The wide body Shelby Super Snake was designed and built at Shelby American’s facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. If the wide body concept reaches the production stage, it will become available worldwide as an official vehicle under the Shelby Registry.
