New photos of the future GT500 Mustang have surfaced, and they show an interesting feature not found on previous models. Rumors have it that a 2019 Shelby GT500 Mustang is in the works, but we’re still waiting for an official announcement.
Images obtained by a forum member on Mustang6G.com, which reportedly came from inside a Ford Motor Company facility. Until heard otherwise, many are calling this high performance Mustang prototype the 2019 GT500.
If you can recall, this prototype first showed itself last summer as it ran in and out of Ford’s test track. The video does not provide much information, however, as to whether it is an early look at a 2018-19 Shelby GT500 mule or a 2018 Shelby GT350 with a refreshed exterior and upgraded engine. Check out the video below to refresh your memory.
It’s All About The Cooling
The entire front bumper on these spy shots is covered in heavy cladding, but look closely. We can easily spot the massive rear wing on the trunk – something that has not been seen before on a Mustang. It may seem like it is just a wing, but the addition of front wheel arch louvers makes us believe that this Mustang is focused on cooling and frontal downforce. Although many of the images are blurry, one image does show the four louvered vents on the front wheel arch visible through black and white vinyl wrap.
The bulgy hood certainly looks like it was made to provide shelter for a large forced induction V8 engine. After all, rumor has it that the new Shelby will be equipped with a supercharged V8 that is expected to make around 800 horsepower. Other changes that are hinted by the camouflage and cladding is a very aggressive and protruding lower grille and splitter. These features point back to what was previously said about aerodynamic upgrades in the works.
The wheel covers may also be hiding the carbon wheels spied earlier on this prototype, or something entirely new altogether. Previous spied images revealed the prototype sporting Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, which are more aggressive than the GT350’s Pilot Super Sports. The car can also be seen riding on black 9-spoke wheels that look eerily similar to the CR-9 wheel made by Carbon Revolution – the company that supplies the factory carbon fiber wheels on the Shelby GT350R Mustang.
To the naked eye, most of these photos appear to look similar to a standard GT350 model. With that said and minimal leaked information, we can discern that Ford Motor Company is either working on an upgraded aerodynamics package for the Shelby GT350R Mustang, or they are using the GT350R Mustangs as test mules for the long-rumored Shelby GT500.
The worst care scenario can be that this is nothing more than a developmental model with unique additions that they are testing without any concrete future plans. Take a closer look at the spied photos and decide for yourself!
