Nowadays in the movie industry, it seems that a wide range of them are just remakes of older ones. Even Ford Motor Company is getting in on the popular trend, with an ode to the film Cʼétait un Rendezvous (known as Rendezvous for short). The very modern reboot with the Ford Mustang GT is marking the 40th anniversary of the original 9-minute film by French filmmaker Claude Lelouch. Originally reported on by Mustang6G, it’s certainly exciting to see the Mustang get a lead role, especially after seeing it in more “supporting roles” in films like Need for Speed.
The Original Cʼétait un Rendezvous from 1976
The original 1976 movie captured a man on a daring drive through Paris in the early morning hours to meet his lovely significant other. Red lights are blatantly ignored at near triple digit speeds; there is even a moment when he goes down a one-way street in the wrong direction. All these risks are taken so that he can make his rendezvous at the famous Sacré-Cœur Basilica.
There is no narration and it was all one full take, filmed with a simple bumper camera. Although it was not a very fancy or technologically advanced clip, it can be it gave viewers goosebumps and kept them on the edge of their seats. It had been an accepted philosophy that the car used in Claude Lelouch’s fim was his own Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9L with Ferrari engine sounds inserted as the audio track.
The Ford Mustang Re-Rendez-Vous Reboot
For “Re-Rendez-Vous”, a 2016 Ford Mustang GT V8 Fastback takes the front stage by storm. GTB (Ford’s WPP global agency) partnered directly with Lelouch for this film, which means it should be close to the original. This remake follows a similar route past landmarks that include Montmarte, the Arc de Triomphe and Sacré Cœur Basilica.
Ford explains that roads have changed since the original film and therefore cannot follow exactly in its predecessor’s footsteps. The roles are also reversed here; a woman is driving the car and racing to meet her man.
VR 360-View Gives a Modern Twist to the Original
A challenge for filmmakers was trying to re-create the sense of exhilaration that the original had. Today’s movie critics and moviegoers are more accustomed to the world of CGI explosions at every corner and are, therefore, a little harder to impress. Since camera technology has since improved, Ford has chosen to give us their tribute in stunning 360-degree Virtual Reality.
Rendezvous is one of the most iconic European driving films from the 1900’s, so its suitable to use an iconic car like the V8 Fastback to star in it. Now that the Ford Mustang is on sale in Europe, it was only right to create something that symbolized the car culture legacy and its long-awaited European debut.
The Ford Mustang in the new movie clip is a 5.0-litre V8 fastback. This car is available as a convertible, and with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine. Almost 25,000 cars have been sold and ordered in Europe, since the model was originally launched there in 2015.
“Mustang is a symbol of the freedom and thrill of driving. Recreating Lelouch’s cult short film ‘C’etait un Rendez-Vous’ was the perfect way to capture this spirit for a new audience,” said Anthony Ireson, director, Marketing Communications, Ford of Europe.
