2018 Mustang To Get A 10 Speed Automatic Transmission!

In an interesting update on the upcoming revision of the S550 Mustang, it looks like the 2018 Mustang will be receiving a 10-speed automatic. Originally posted by Mustang6g.com, news of the Mustang getting an updated 10-speed automatic transmission has been slowly circulating around the automotive world, with a major clue all but confirming it to be true.

The Clue

An intuitive enthusiast recently discovered a new addition to a drop down parts menu for the S550. On Microcat, the online database system used by Ford dealerships to look up parts for its vehicles, the 10R80 transmission popped up. It was listed under the “2015+ Mustang”, with no specific year attached to it, making us think it will appear in the 2017/2018 refresh.

The Transmission

The transmission is the same 10-speed automatic that will be in the 2017 Raptor. The new SVT 2017 Raptor Gauge ClusterRaptor will be the first Ford vehicle to use this Chevrolet/Ford co-developed drivetrain, that will be mated up to the Raptor’s 3.5L twin turbo EcoBoost V6. There has been no declaration as to what the 10R80 will be available with when it comes to the Mustang, if it will be limited to the EcoBoost models or available with the 5.0L GT as well.

How do you feel about a 10-speed Mustang? Would you drive it or pick something else out of the stable? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Have 8 speed in a 2016 Audi and it works great.
But I don’t need more than that.
Is there some advantages to 10 ratios that I don’t know about? At what point is it just right?
I guess it depends on what your primary use for the car.
