Starting Memorial Day of May 2016, you will be able to rent a 2016 Shelby Mustang GT-H from Hertz & Ford’s rent-a-racer program! This year will be the 50 year anniversary of the legendary program from Hertz, so to celebrate it Ford, Hertz and Shelby teamed up once again to offer a totally bad ass Mustang for rental.
The Rent-A-Racer Program
Back in 1966, you could go down to your local Hertz office and rent a true Shelby GT350 for a weekend. People would rent these Mustangs and take them to their local track and thrash on ’em (in true rental fashion) and return them with *slightly* less tread on the tires. The program’s good intentions was met with people swapping out their motors with the GT350’s and more than handful of accidents from some hot lap all-stars.
With 2016 being the 50th anniversary of the program, Hertz and Ford partnered together to offer this program to the current generation with 140 Shelby GT-H Mustangs becoming available by May 27th.
The 2016 Shelby GT-H Mustang
While you can’t rent a new Shelby GT350 today like you could in 1966, the Shelby GT-H Mustang is far from your typical ‘Stang. Before arriving at a Hertz office, the 2016 Mustang GT receives the royal treatment with a list of upgraded features and parts. The exterior receives a distinctive “Hertz Gold” stripping package, as well as a carbon fiber front splitter, polycarbonate hood with hood vents, upper and lower grilles, rocker panels with carbon fiber accent plates, and a rear spoiler.
Shelby GT-H Performance Upgrades
Helping to elevate the GT-H rental over your standard GT are a mix of mods that any S550 could appreciate. Thanks to some Ford Performance Parts upgrades such as the FP handling pack, cat back exhaust with chrome tips, and FP staggered wheel kit, the Shelby GT-H becomes a wild ride that anyone can rent. Unfortunately, all Shelby GT-H Mustang will come with an automatic gearbox only– a small sacrifice in the grand scheme of the experience.
“Our goal was to give everyone a chance to add some fun to their travel with a distinctive American pony car,” said Doug White, Ford Performance Parts manager. “So Ford Performance and Shelby American sharpened the handling, improved the performance, sweetened the exhaust note and added distinctive Hertz styling to the Mustang. Anyone who rents a limited edition Ford Shelby GT-H will enjoy a very special driving experience.”
There has been no mention as to how much it will cost to rent one of these stallions, but beginning Memorial Day Weekend you can rent a Shelby GT-H exclusively through Hertz’s Adrenaline Collection at select airport locations in the United States.
What do you think? Will you pony up the cash to rent a legend or will you stick with you sub-compact that smells like a pack of old cigarettes?
