Ford has already confirmed that they will indeed be producing the Cobra Jet for the 2015 model year, but it is still unclear what platform it will be built on.
One would expect the 2015 Mustang Cobra Jet–a turnkey drag racer produced in a limited capacity each year–to be built on the 2015 Mustang’s new S550 platform, but that might not be the case. Hot Rod has confirmed the Cobra Jet will indeed return with a 6th generation body style, but speculates it might share the Taurus or a rear wheel version of the AWD Fusion’s platform instead as Ford would not confirm that it was sharing one with the the 2015 Mustang. The fact that they were so tight lipped before the official unveiling of the new Mustang could also explain why they would not confirm nor deny this, but either way, it’s something we’ll be waiting for Ford to make an announcement on.
As for what was actually said: Jesse Kershaw, Ford Racing’s Drag Racing Parts and Competition Manager told Hot Rod “ Our goals remain the same for next year as they are every year, produce a competitive product at a price that is a value for the racer. We want to ensure this program is here to stay. ”
2015 Cobra Jet Paint Colors
There’s also no word if the same 2014 Cobra Jet color themes will be offered for the next breed of these turnkey race cars, or if we’ll only have a selection from the 2015 Mustang color options to choose from. Though, it would be nice to see more Competition Orange CJs racing down the track as it’s a color that made a special impact on the 2003-2004 Terminator Cobra crowd and returned for a 1 of 1 CJ build for a charity auction last year. Seeing as it is now one of the new color options for the 2015 Mustang, it probably wouldn’t be out of the question for Ford to offer it as an optional paint scheme for the next CJ.
You can safely bet on Ford offering a Cobra Jet in 2015. Getting your hands on one might be tricky, though. Ford apparently has already taken 50 placeholder orders as of September.
