PHOTOS: Could This Be The New 2015 Mustang?

Yes, this looks like your average 2013 GT when it comes to the body, but there are a few clues that this spy photographer picked up that might make this the Test Mule for the next-gen 2015 Mustang.

What you ask? According to the spy photographer, the super-wide panel gaps, missing roof channel fillers and the wider roof seam channels, odd fuel cover, diced up rear diffuser all point toward this being just a shell of a 2013 Mustang.

According to rumors swirling around, the 5.0-L Coyote V8 is said to continue on through 2015, but halting the production of the V6 Mustang has been thrown around with the introduction of the EcoBoost. That means that the current V6 Mustang is rumored to be replaced with a 2.3-liter or turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Can you say SVO?

Not only that but it is said to have IRS, independent rear suspension, and it is in fact going global. The so-called Control Blade trailing-arm setup is perhaps compares most to the RWD Falcon from Australia.

Hopefully , we won’t wait too long before we know for sure and as Ford enjoys the PDA, the 2015 model will likely be unveiled at the 2014 New York Auto Show just in time for the 50th anniversary celebration.

  1. No irs. And i dont wana see stupid 4 bangers running on the streets. Might as well bring back the old mustang 4 cylinder if u wana do something stupid

      1.  it should be a performance increase. it should get an engine about 90% similar to the mazda ms6 and probably push about 300-330hp. Plus it would be wayy more tuneable than the current maxed out sixer. turbo cars are easy to mod.

Hayden, actually the 3.7L V6 isn’t maxed out.  That engine is good for 350 hp without much work.  That comes directly from a Ford engineer that is working on the engine line up.  In any case, I don’t care as long as the 5.0 doesn’t go anywhere.  Let’s just hope they don’t screw up the body on the 2015 like they did in 1974 and tried to in 1989 (Probe).

  3. This is clearly testing an IRS in this chassis. You can tell due to the negative camber of the rear wheels. It’s slight but it’s there. Also, this is probably testing an ecoboost 4 banger with such small exhaust to see what the big car might be like with the ecoboost motor. Personally, they need to keep this current v6 in the line-up. An ecoboost 4 would not make the right power to propel this heavy car. And hopefully this 4 cylinder would come with forged internals so when people arent happy with the power they can modify it to make more. Coyote v8 continuing is a great idea. If they decide to make a Shelby version, it needs to use the coyote v8 engine. It’s been proven that you can resleeve the coyote block and stroke it enough to make the same 5.8L the Shelby makes and they have much better flowing heads.

    4. i think a eco boost 6 cyl wouldnt be to bad. but personally a eco boost 5.0 would be what id like to see. the 4 cyl idea should be offerd on a 4 cyl eco boost focus. i agree with teej281 they are clearly trying a irs in these pics for sure. a eco boost 5.0 with irs its kinda like haveing the 03-04 cobra back…. mabey thats the plan..

      2.  Where’d you get the idea of an Ecoboost 5.0? No way in hell would they be turbocharging the 5.0 for production. However, you can tell that they definitely are testing IRS out  (Another thing I dislike, hence the reason I went ahead and bought a ’11 5.0 in April 2011) as mentioned because of the negative camber in the rear. If that wasn’t IRS then there would be no negative camber whatsoever.

    6.  totes dissagree on power issues, the 4 cylinder will be just fine under that load, just have to gear it right, i would assume the turbocharged version has forged internals, youre “theroy” on just testing IRS is wrong, you dont have to chop up the rear bumper or take any pannels off for that matter.. and what does stroking the engine really matter on this? i mean the name shelby mustang was bought from carroll years ago beacause carroll didnt want anything to do with it anymore..

  5. There is a 2015, yes it exists, according to an insider I spoke with this past weekend while at the all ford nationals in Carlisle. So it makes perfect sense to me that there are test mules lurking the streets. The 4banger thing is something we’ll likely have to get used to, don’t blame ford, blame the current administration and the CAFE standards set in place… Ultimately i’m not too concerned with the idea of a 4 cyl ecoboost/”SVO”.. I’ll be building off that great coyote power plant come 2015. So if you don’t care for the 4, pony up to the 8!

  6. Thats gonna suck so bad, if they take away the v6.  Think about it.  The v6 is an awesome plateform for tuning.  If they put a 4 in it we’d be going backwaords for one.  and it will never have the same potential as the v6.  FORD IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL SUCK SO BAD!

I agree Nate, and Zechman you should probably read up on your mustang history before posting something that is both wrong and makes you seem like you read at a 5th grade level.   IF this is implemented doing away with the 6cyl would be a wise business move as well as a wise performance decision.  Implementing an Eco-boosted 4cyl, making it the new mass market Mustang whilst keeping the Coyote V8 for the GT on up will keep the die hard mustang fans happy, and a true die hard mustang fan understands that there are more then 2 different body styles that have gone through production… I for one would be excited to see what they could do with the 4cyl with the engine tech they have today.  I may even replace my 04 GT vert with one.

      3. A souped up 4 turbo beating a stock 6..Yes that can happen, given the car type. Will a turbo 4 beat a turbo 6? No…Not even close… Nissan and even FPV Falcon with the turbo 6 are making over 1000 hp. A turbo 4 will not do that without extensive rebuilds, a metric crap ton of boost and the kitchen sink..

  7. Independant rear suspension will bring it into the 21st century and enable it to be worth buying in Europe! 4-Cylinder turbo engine would help as well. Good news for Europe if this is true🙂

  9. The design is all wrong to be a 2015 model. Perhaps the possible concept of the mechanics of this car could be part of the 2014-2015 but not the look of the car. Sadly the 50th Anniversary design of the new Stang will be departing from the Fastback retro look to a 100% completely updated design…

  11. Nothing wrong with a turbo 4 as long as it makes the same or more power than the current 6. People that buy the v6 obviously don’t care about the number of cylinders. If they did, they would have gotten a GT.

    1. Not exactly. Some people don’t have all the money in the world such as myself. I’d love a new GT but I can’t afford it. Ended up being a brand new V6 or a 2009 GT for me. I like the new style much better and the new V6 performs about as well as the old GT. There’s my 2 cents.

  12. Dont be so dead set against losing the V6 in favor of a turbo I4. There are advantage to a smaller engine, weight being one of them. A lighter, more compact engine will also allow for a smaller chassis, although we’re not likely to see much in the way of changes with the general shape of the front end, it does, after all, still need to be big enough to cram a Coyote into it.

    Also note, that an I4 will likely be small enough to be mounted transverse, allowing an FWD/AWD mustang to be more easily implmented while still having a front midships design.(engine CG behind front axle centerline)

    1. They tried that (FWD) in 1989 with the Probe.  Ford got so much hate mail, they continued with the fox body until they changed the body style in 1994.  They (Ford) will NOT go FWD with the Mustang.  I have that from a Ford engineer.  He also said that the 5.0 will be in the 2015 GT.

From everything I have read, Ford is moving totally away from the retro look and going to some type of Euro styling.  Plus, it is rumored that the 5.0 may not continue into the new model.  Lots of speculation, but I just hope they treat the 50th anniversary right and not pull a Mustang II again!!

  14. It better be able to still do burnouts like a freaking beast. I hate that ask these new cars with independent rear suspension can’t handle doing property well formed burnouts, like the love axles on the mustangs can do. It was actually I’ve if the few things I was period of ford to stick with. I see benefits with it, but they better do a damn good job with it then. America doesn’t need another waste of a muscle car. mustang was the last of the great stay true to the name cars. I love Did and I don’t want to see my favorite Car ever be a lane test subject when they already have the perfect formula. JUST SAYIN’.

  16. More speculation IMO. What’s the point of ditching something as advanced and complex as their new 3.7L sixer just four years after production began. And I don’t wont IRS to be honest, make it optional, make it standard for export cars, but keep it off domestic ponies.

There is a very high chance that we will see an Eco-boost option on the 2015 Mustang, that may be imported from the Fusion (2.0l 237hp I4) or the Taurus SHO (365-hp, 3.5-liter V-6); For the simple reason that both of these engine platforms have already been introduced into production and have been well received. The 5.0 Coyote is not going anywhere, it is a staple of the mustang and at this point in time a big selling point. I expect that in 2015 Ford will actually offer an I4, V6, and V8 option. Carrol Shelby put it best when asked if he thought they would sell many GT1000’s “Probably not, we will probably brake even, but it will make a lot of people want one, and that will sell a hell of a lot of V6 Mustangs”. The fact is that in today’s crappy economy an inline 4 mustang for under $20k that puts out more power than an 05 GT will sell; and it will easily outsell the GT.

  19. Anybody who is OK with a 4 cylinder mustang should not be allowed to own a mustang. They should instead go buy a Honda. Mustang=American muscle=v8 power. No 4 bangers. Mustang is more than just a car made to be fast. Its its an icon to American ideology of racing. Big two door rear wheel v8’s. To make it a four cylinder is to take away what is a mustang.

    mustangs by the dozen so the price of 5.0s and Boss’s will be affordable
    (and cheaper for swaps later on…..)
    should go and buy a honda, wait I own two mustangs and a honda in the
    form of a CBR600RR, Ford should drop their 1.0L EcoBoost motor they
    prototyped onto a yahama sport bike because if you could just drop an
    elec. wastegate on that thing holy crap you’d have a ducati killer, a
    turbo’d sport bike from the factory. I’m just saying, to keep up with
    and in honor of Carroll Shelby’s horsepower war w/ germany we should
    take it the next stage and go with a bike war vs italy!! because that’s
    where war belongs is on the race track not with guns, IMO,

  21. Whenever they release an official rendering of the 2015, im sure everyone will be in line to get one. I think a 4 banger would be a good idea if its putting out as much HP as the previous V6 or more. But for me im waiting to see what’s to come and cant wait to get in one of the new GT’s.As we all know Ford has done all they could with the live axle and I think they will do even better with an IRS under the frame like the Cobra which was a killer and still is a killer Mustang

  22. IRS is overdue. The Ecoboost motor will make 300 hp and weigh very little, so you get power and handling.
    Expect the next Mustang to retain the long hood/short deck look, have a pony in the grille, and otherwise look nothing like the current car. Take the Evos concept, tweak the grille with a pony, and you get something closer to the previous Mustang (i.e. up through 2004).
    Which is a good thing, that was a great design.
    I like the current car, but the handling is so-so, its a little too big, and I’d give up some hp in exchange for serious weight reduction. 300 hp in a car that’s, let’s say, 3400 lbs. that would be tasty.
    Enough to make me give up my German car and go back to my Mustang roots.

  23. Nobody liked the Mustang II but it set sales records when it came out durning the gas shortage back in the 1970s. Ford needs to get a 4 cylinder out with a 5 speed transmission and start it about $18,000 . Not everyone can afford a Shelby !!!!!!!!!!
