WATCH: Our 2012 Boss 302 Mustang vs. a Camaro SS!

We might be having too much fun, but last week AmericanMuscle rented out the Lightning road course over at New Jersey Motorsports Park. We brought our brand new Boss 302 Mustang and decided to tear up the course against a 2010 Camaro SS! (oh yes we did!)

There’s no question that our purpose-built stock Boss 302 had a handling and braking advantage over the similarly-hp-rated Camaro SS. To be fair, the Camaro SS was also bone stock, and might have had no chance!

Thanks to our drivers (AM Employees: Jim Bianco and Andrew Ball) for taking some time from their real work for a boring day at the track with the biggest rivals in muscle car history!

Lap Times:
2012 Boss 302 Mustang 1:20.392
2010 Camaro SS 1:22.440

So tell us, was this the outcome you expected? Comment below!

both drivers are terrible. The Boss is the faster track car.

as usual the mustang did what it is supposed to do. remember GM is always playing catch up with every car they make. dump the camaro then years later lets do one again. i work on cars every day GM or chev. has not made a good small car ever. remember corvair? vega?citation? cavalier? cobalt warmed over cavalier. now cruze  warmed over cobalt. i get a kick out of cobalts with SS emblems. my 2011 fusion sport will kick most of chevs. stuff. only car chev. makes where they took there time is a corvette but even they had nitemares in the 80s electronic problems up the kazoo. i wonder why i can remember the part numbers for a 305 chev cam lifters time chain and gaskets and i left NAPA in 1985. i used to sell 5 a day . also remember FORD built without your tax dollars

Motor Trend (independent test) tracked the Boss 302 around Laguna Seca and compared the best lap time against the best lap times of some more expensive performance cars. It clearly shows that price is no indication of performance when it comes to track racing.

    2011 Shelby GT500     1:44.32
    2011 BMW M3            1:42.96
    2011 Audi R8              1:40.75

    2011 Boss 302           1:40.21

The Camaro never stood a chance. The base model price for an Audi R8 is $114,000. So to all those who are saying that you should compare a car to similarly priced competitors, I offer this as proof of superior performance at less than half the cost. The Boss 302 is currently the ultimate in performance bang-for-your-buck.

What matters is who stands behind their car, I have a( purcased new) 2007 Mustang GT still under warranty, (9800 miles) which ford does nothing to fix as far as the badly designed heads where the spark plugs can break off in the head at the possible cost of thousands of dolloars to fix. okay, well i’m gonna put all you camaro lovers to rest.  All in all lets face the facts.  Ford has dropped not 1 not 2 not 3 but at least 4 new mustangs in the past couple years.  What has to golden bow tie done.  Nothing as of yet, they think that they can keep adding power to a platform that was actually designed to to only bet the 99-04 body style mustangs.  Specially considering that Ford pulled a fast on the world and said that body style was gonna be used for another five years.  Face it bow tie boys, the camaro is being seriously out gunned.  Even the 2010 4.6 gt held its own in the motor trend and car and driver tests.  I have an idea though.  Remember all those years of constant bragging the camaro boys did even though mustangs kicked butt on the roadtracks since the late 60′s.  Now its the Blue oval back out in front the way it should be.  Cause chevy’s are like a rock for one reason, thats how well they sink.

Take a look at 1:47 and you’ll see A. why the Mustang was so slow off the line and B. why the Camaro wsa at least 2 seconds behind with similar specs(besides weight).

The Mustang was doing a first and second gear burnout off the line.  Grats to that guy I guess.

The Camaro was wheelhopping its nuts off. Look at the chattered lines! You’d think that Chevy would be able to put a decent IRS under their new baby, right?  They’ve had IRS under the Corvette since the 60′s!

Ill bag on Camaros and Chevys all day long. But at the end of the day at least its not an import. Ford vs Chevy, to me, is kind of like brotherly rivalry. Its more for than the competitiveness to push each other further than a real hatred. But, yes, at 27-28 seconds the Camaro driver taps the brakes. Not for the corner because its waaay before the corner. Probably just driver error. Maybe hes not used to the pedals. In all fairness id say switch the drivers and do it again. Or get a driver who is used to the feel of  Chevy.

I am a Mustang supporter and owner of a 2011 5.0 with 3.73 rear end.  In all honesty the Camaro should have  been raced against a Mustang like mine.  The  Boss 302 is really a special edition and unless I’ve missed something the Camaro is the standard one.  Price- wise I think the Camaro is a little more expensive than the standard 5.0 as far as actual selling price. The standard 5.0 vs Camero are tied at 4.6 sec. from 0 to 60 mph.  In the quarter the Camaro is .2 seconds faster at 13 vs 13.2.  That said my 5.0 will get away from the Camaro from 40 to about 70 mph but eventually gets passed by the Camaro before the end of the quarter.  It isn’t because the Camaro is more car/engine but rather in the gearing.  Although the Camaro has a 14 hp advantange the Mustang has about 280 weight advantage. That gives the Mustang a slight horsepower to weight ratio advantage. The Mustang has a much better transmission (for performance) than the Camaro in that the Camero has 2 overdriven gears (which to my knowledge  the vast majority of 6 speeds have 2 overdrives) whereas the Mustang has only 1.  Depending on the dealers where you are and how well you negotiate I don’t think you can find any new car with more performance for your money than the (standard) 5.0.  Hope this has shed some light.

As. 2012 boss owner and someone who has driven all Chevy has to offer (purely as research), I can unequivocally say that chevy had A LOT o catching up to do. This car is insane and will roast nearly anyone it sees on the road…stock! Can’t wait for the mods to start pouring put. RIP all.

  • Sparkie

Great cars, love the Boss, no need for the shit music though over the top, the V8 soundtrack would have been sufficient

What SS? HA! GM has always been in Ford’s shadow when it comes to real horsepower and it looks like that’s where they’ll stay.SS has to stand for Super Slow…..

    • V8

Gm has always been in fords shadow when it comes to real hp…..wtf in case u forgot gm currently makes the most powerful street legal production small block in America…..the 640jp LS9

  • Mantas15

ok I have drag raced mustangs for years. My freind races his 2010 camaro. For some time out of the box the camaro was faster. But for a heck of alot less money you could mod the mustang and beat the camaros. Mustang has a much bigger aftermarket then camaro. Some of these comments here are just stupid and I’m sure from people that couldn’t change their oil. The fact of the matter is in the real world now the mustang is a better car off the showroom floor and the bowtie boys (the ones who can’t turn a wrench) are ticked off. A slightly modded mustang will run low 12s in the quarter. and your not going to do that in a camaro.

It took the CAMARO to wake ford up! ford rested by putting 300hp in the stang for years until Chevy gave their V6 more HP than your almighty “GT” ohh ….then then got back in the game. you ford nuts should be thanking CAMARO !

  • DAVE MSTG0511

YOUR BOSS 302 WAS AWESOME!!! THE [10-12] YR. MUSTANG MODELS ARE FANTASTIC IN THE STYLING DEPARTMENT. AND THE HANDLING AND DRIVEABILITY OF THESE MUSCLE CARS TOAST THE CHEVY CAMARO ANY DAY….I SAY THIS BECAUSE I OWN A 2011 MCA EDITION MUSTANG ALONG WITH A 05 MUSTANG. THEY  WILL KICK CHEVY IN THE BUTT EVERY TIME.

  • Kvloos

That Was dumb why would they compare the boss to the ss when the gt already won

I just watched the video with my two and half year old grandson.  He wants to watch it again for the third time!  He loves Mustangs because his grandpa has a 2001 Mustang convertible.  Thanks for the video, we really enjoyed it.

Got a little nervous when they left the line, very shortly after I felt safe .  Great day for the mustang. the chevys don’t seen to dominate any more, thanks to FORD MOTOR COMPANY. Jeff, Gloucester, Va.

  • Spadedgritz

Perhaps if the Camaro wasn’t stock and had the same amount of upgrades, your Mustang would have lost. Actually it most likely would have lost. The Camaro even bone stock, had your Mustang off the line. Add suspension and a few bolt ons and the Camaro would have owned.

Check out Grand Am racing and let that decide pal Mr. Eshew3, as far as this road race is concerned, I have a 2011 Camaro SS, stock suspension is absolutely horrible. For a stock Camaro SS to only be 2 seconds behind Fords best track car is a shame for Ford sorry guys. This means even with suspension mods alone the Camaro SS would be breathing down the Mustangs neck or past it to be more realistic. My car with bushing and control arms and swaybar mods alone will wipe the floors with any stock Camaro SS , I haven’t even done coilovers yet. Imaging my car on this track instead of this one.

  • RadicaL

Somehow i was sure that the 302 would leave the ss in the dust!!!! yipeeeeeeeee

  • Dbonekp

Mustang fans are delusional, it is clearly evident the camaro destroys the mustang off the line.  This race is so fixed it is rediculas.

  • Briangammey

Gotta admit it was no where near the a** whooping I was expecting.

  • Rob Pattinson

that launch for the boss was pretty pathetic i must admit. if it can bead the m3 of the line than it can with the camaro

  • Jonathancantley

The dominant car won here, definitely what I expected from the new 2012 Boss 302.A little surprised at takeoff, but once they got going, that wasn’t much of a surprise from there. It’s ok you chevy crybabies, once GM starts making camaros on time each year, and stops being dazzled by the Ford Mustang performances, then you guys might have something to fall back on……..LIKE A BOSS

  • Jzuniga1341

i agree with the other guy ( the 2011 5.0 ) already beat the camaro. baiscally a waste of gas. Im sure it was fun, but not for cause i wasnt behind the wheel of the new BOSS.

  • gt500

This is rigged. You can see the SS let off to let Boss pass. Disappointed. Love mustang but this is a scam.

  • RCRacer94GT

It would have been better if they raced the cars with the same driver. it does look like it was sandbagged cause at 26-28 sec. camaro does brake and the mustang driver F-ed up the launch and the camaro left him in the dust. Sorry guys but this is a pointless Video that proves nothing. And this is coming from a FORD guy.

  • Nocbigpapa

I see many arguments as I have since back in the 60′s about Camaro VS Mustang.  I have owned both and love them both.  American made Hot Rods!!  That’s all that matters to me.
If you want we can get either car to stomp the other.  It’s all about who has deeper pockets my friends.
Let’s just keep trying to out do other countries and get back to having them catch up with our technology in the USA like many years ago.  I’m tired of us having to keep up with theirs.
Camaro or Mustang?  Who cares.  Just go have fun!!

  • DevilsRule4Ever
