Video: Petty Paces Daytona in 2011 Mustang GT

2010 Daytona 500 Pace Car

For one lap yesterday at the Daytona International Speedway, a 72 year old driver led the NASCAR pack.

Racing legend Richard Petty was back in a familiar position at the start of the Daytona 500 on Sunday. But rather than strapping into a ride stenciled with the fabled #43 and doing 200 laps on the Daytona oval, Petty piloted the pace car, a 2011 Ford Mustang GT.

Richard Petty Motorsports, which recently acquired Yates Racing, has returned to the Ford Racing family for the 2010 Sprint Cup season.

Prior to the race, the record holding seven time winner of the Daytona 500 told fordracing.com:

“There’s nothing like the Daytona 500,” Petty said. “It’s one of the biggest races in the world and to be a part of it in this way is the next-best thing to actually being able to race. Who knows, maybe I’ll just stay out there for a few laps and see what those guys have got.”

At the end of the first lap, the green flag waved, and the field split around the pace car. King Richard eased the Mustang down pit row, and the strange race that followed, marred by long stoppages for track problem repairs, was underway.

2/25/10 update: Here’s a video from Ford Racing of the pace lap, and comments from Richard Petty – pretty cool!

FoMoCo To Cut Production of 2010 Mustang!

It is a sad day in Mustang history. For the first time in 45 years, the Mustang name will not grace the showroom floors of your local dealerships.

Press Release: FOMOCO To Cut Production of 2010 Mustang! (Synopsis)

  • Following suit with other major automotive manufacturers, Ford Motor Company announced today that due to the current state of the economy and the decline in Mustang sales throughout the 2009 year, FoMoCo will be cutting production of the 2010 Mustang. This comes as no surprise as other automotive manufacturers dump performance and luxury models to consolidate and concentrate on money saving, earth-friendly “green” vehicles.

When asked for comment, FoMoCo stated that this was no easy decision. While the future of the Mustang name may seem grim, FoMoCo ensured us that it was not gone for good and there are already talks of eventually reviving it with a hybrid refresh of the fuel-sipping 2.3L In-line 4 Cylinder motor.

During the month of December 2008, rival forum members sent in objects to AmericanMuscle in an effort to earn the points necessary to bring victory to their forum, that and the fact that pictures of some poor AmericanMuscle Employee using the objects would be posted for their amusement. But, the objects sent in were of such wanton and gratuitous depravity that they could only be properly portrayed in this film.

AM Gives Away Over $2000 In Gifts

To Unsuspecting Mustang Owners

AmericanMuscle.com has always been known for running its crazy contests on both its BLOG and also on the forums it sponsors! Their latest “All I Want For Christmas Wish List Contest” on AllFordMustangs.com required forum members to post up two wish lists, one list of what their Mustang wanted for Christmas, and one wish list of what they wanted personally for Christmas, for a chance to win one of three $100 AmericanMuscle Gift Certificates! Pretty sweet, but that is not where the real story is.

Here is where the story gets really good! At the end of the contest, AmericanMuscle’s Forum Representative AMNick picked out nearly 20 items worth over $2000 from people’s personal wish lists, including a Digital Camera, Bowling Ball, a 204 Piece Craftsman Tool Kit, a Nintendo Wii, toys for a member’s 3 year old daughter, and even some retro 80’s tube socks, and actually sent them the items on their lists, all on the company dime!

When asked if he was afraid of getting fired for what seemed like an incredible act of lunacy, AMNick responded, “Absolutely not! I had the full support of AmericanMuscle behind me on this one! The thing about AmericanMuscle is we can fully relate to our customers because we are real Mustang people too. With the currently devastated economy, we just thought this would be a great way to help out our fellow Mustang enthusiasts in these financially difficult times.”

Needless to say there were some very surprised, and very happy people on AllFordMustangs.com that day!
